Komline-Wyssmont FAQs

Q:  Can your sales dept give a quotation without testing?

A:  Sometimes a quotation can be provided if Wyssmont has previous experience with the material being dried. Normally, Wyssmont’s first response to an inquiry includes a budget estimate for the capacity required based on our previous experience.

Q:  Can references be provided?

A:  Yes we can provide references.  Please refer to our clients and applications page on this website.  We have over 75 years of experience and over 500 installations.

Q:  What is the normal on-stream time for a Turbo-Dryer?

A:  Very high. Turbo Dryers usually operate round the clock, month after month, without the need for a  maintenance shutdown.  Many companies operate for 2 year periods or longer without shutdown.  Normal lubrication maintenance can be performed while the Turbo Dryer is being operated.

Q:  How easy is the Turbo-Dryer to operate?

A:  Very easy, with hardly any need for operator attention.  The dryer normally operates with only annual or bi-annual maintenance required.  Comments from plant managers often include the statements;  “The Turbo-Dryer is the most trouble-free equipment in our plant” or “The Turbo-Dryer is the best piece of equipment in our plant”.  The self-compensating feature automatically adjusts for feed rate variations.  Many users say: “We turn it on, and forget about it”.

Q:  How is the Turbo-Dryer with very dusty products?  Will it blow material around or off the trays?

A:  The speed of the Turbo-Fans can be adjusted to minimize or eliminate dust blowing around.  The Turbo-Dryer does not create or generate dust, and it gives the most uniform product of any dryer.

Q:  How does the Turbo Dryer avoid hot spots inside dryer or on the trays?

A:  The Turbo-Fan inside the dryer continuously moves mixed hot air or inert gas across the trays to provide uniform heating of the material.  It has the most uniform and precise temperature control of any dryer.  Turbo-Dryers have operated within one °C of the melting point of a product, something no other dryer can do.  Unlike some other dryers, the trays are not internally heated.  This means that the product is never overheated in order to increase heat transfer efficiencies.

Q:  What source of energy does a Turbo Dryer need for heating?

A:  Turbo Dryers can use any heating source appropriate to the nature of the product, and the required temperature inside the dryer.

Q:  Can you scale up to bigger units directly from the lab testing?

A:  Yes, Wyssmont has the best record for successful scale-ups from laboratory testing to full size units compared to any other dryer manufacturer.

Q:  Do I need a pilot test?

A:  Piloting is not normally required, except when large quantities of the product are required for product evaluation, or if its customer’s policy.

Q:  What is the normal delivery time for a Turbo-Dryer?

A:  4-9 months depending on the current work loads and the size of the Turbo-Dryer.  If a unit from Wyssmont’s inventory can be used, shorter deliveries are normal.

Q:  Which parts need to be maintained?

A:  Drive components such as motors, reducers, belts and chains need regular lubrication and inspection which can be done while the dryer is operating.  Wipers, bottom sweepers, top and bottom bearings may need replacing due to wear or improper operation.  Spare drive components like motors, reducers, belts and chains should be kept on hand.  Also spare bearings, wiper blades and bottom sweepers.  Maintenance on the Turbo-Dryer is remarkably low – usually less than 1% of the price of the dryer annually.

Q:  What information do you need from client prior to running laboratory tests?

A:  Initial moisture content and composition (if not water), product and the technique for analyzing the moisture, projected production rates and the characteristics of the heating source are a few of the key questions we need to know before starting with lab testing.  A filled out Drying Questionnaire is best to better address client needs.  This questionnaire is available in our home page.

Q:  What can we expect by testing with Wyssmont?

A:  Test product samples, drying curves, temperature charts, results from moisture analysis, budget quote from sales department are a few of the items submitted.
